What’s In Your Jewelry? Let’s Talk Metals, Allergies & How to Make It Last
Ever wondered what really makes up your favorite jewelry pieces? Whether you’re a silver lover, a gold-layering queen, or just trying to figure out what works for your skin, this post will help decode the world of metals in jewelry—and how to take care of your collection for years to come.
During my latest live session, I went deep into the differences between metal types, what terms like “gold-filled” or “vermeil” actually mean, and how to protect your jewelry from tarnish, fading, and wear.

Silver 101: Shiny vs Oxidized
Not all silver is the same! Here’s a quick breakdown:
• Pure Silver (Fine Silver) – 99.9% silver. Too soft for most jewelry.
• Sterling Silver – 92.5% silver mixed with 7.5% copper. This is what I use in my jewelry. It’s hypoallergenic for most people.
• Silver-Filled – A thick layer of silver bonded over brass. Less common, but more durable than plating.
• Silver-Plated – A super thin layer of silver over a base metal. Looks good at first but wears off fast.
🖤 Oxidized silver is just sterling that’s been intentionally darkened for a rich, dramatic look—and it’s totally safe to wear. Want to see the transformation? I even showed a live demo of how I oxidize a silver necklace!

Gold: What Are You Actually Wearing?
Let’s bust a common myth: if your jewelry says “gold” but costs $100, it’s not solid gold.
Here’s the breakdown:
• 24K Gold – 99.9% pure, super soft, usually used in fine, non-daily jewelry.
• 18K Gold – 75% gold, rich tone, more luxurious.
• 14K Gold – 58.5% gold, more durable, perfect balance for everyday.
• Gold-Filled – Real gold bonded over brass (5% of total weight). Durable, lasts 10+ years, and no nickel!
• Gold Vermeil – Sterling silver base with thick gold plating (2.5 microns). Luxurious and typically hypoallergenic.
• Gold-Plated – Thin flash of gold over base metal (often contains nickel). Wears off quickly and may irritate sensitive skin.
⚠️ Tip: Always ask what’s underneath the gold layer—especially if you have skin sensitivities!

The Truth About Nickel Allergies
Many people don’t realize that nickel is the culprit behind itchy, red ears or rashes from jewelry. The good news? Most gold-filled and vermeil jewelry (like mine!) is nickel-free and safe for sensitive skin.
But be cautious with gold-plated or silver-plated items—especially from large marketplaces or mass-produced pieces. You just never know what’s under the surface.

How to Make Your Jewelry Last: Avoid the 5 S’s
To keep your favorite pieces looking their best, remember these five things to avoid while wearing jewelry:
1. Shower 🚿
2. Swim 🏖️
3. Sleep 😴
4. Sweat 💦
5. Spray (perfume, hairspray, sunscreen) 🌬️
And my favorite hack? Keep your jewelry in a small Ziploc bag with an anti-tarnish square. Stop by the store and I’ll give you a few for free—or I’ll include them with your next order!
